Artist Statement

Soo is a mixed-media artist working with pigmented alcohol inks and using a heat gun to create “flow” across the page, forming compositions as they dry. She blends different colors, adds metallic strokes, and incorporates fine lines to tell a story. Her creative process is about being in the moment and letting go. It requires total concentration to fully engage and forces her to let everything else go. She is inspired by the desire to recapture that sense of play and carries the vision of feeling free in nature, being open, honest, and free.

Through art, we find healing. Soo Kim is a contemporary artist who expresses the various stories of human emotions and vulnerability. Intuitively drawing from her passion and background in graphic design and art direction, she explores the elements of light, space, and composition through her use of color and texture. Initially drawn to the healing power of alcohol inks, Soo's art results in original ethereal, calming, and reenergizing works.

Interview

What inspires your art practice and keeps you motivated?
I truly believe in the healing power of alcohol inks. For me, creating with them is essential—it’s how I find balance, focus, and relaxation. It keeps me grounded, serving as an expression of my soul and a way to release emotions. Through my art, I aim to tell stories of human emotions and share a sense of connection and healing.

How does your mission as an artist influence the work you create?
My mission is to allow everyone to experience the soothing and transformative power of art. Through the calming flow of alcohol inks, I hope to inspire healing and reflection in those who view or engage with my work.

Can you share a key part of your creative process that helps you stay focused?
With limited time to create each day, I make it a priority to block out dedicated creative time. As I teach in the afternoons, I stay mindful of my schedule, ensuring that I carve out moments each day to focus on my art.

What mindset tip do you rely on to overcome challenges in your art career?
I embrace fear and failure as opportunities for growth. Mistakes are a natural part of the journey, and instead of letting them hold me back, I choose to learn and celebrate each step forward. A little self-encouragement—like giving myself a mental high-five—helps me stay motivated every day.

How do you hope your art impacts the world or your community?
I hope my artwork serves as a source of healing and a moment of calm for anyone who experiences it. Whether it’s a brief escape or a deep emotional connection, I want my art to help people unwind and find peace in their daily lives.
