Nishi Patel
Nishi Patel is a South Asian American artist and poet based in Fort Worth, Texas. Self-taught and creating since childhood, Nishi’s artwork consists of abstract and semi-abstract paintings. The Inheritance of Grief (2022) is her debut book, and she is currently working on her second poetry book for 2025. Nishi holds a Clinical Laboratory Scientist degree and is a credentialed Montessori teacher, which influences how she sees the world on both a microscopic and macroscopic scale. She currently works out of a large spare room that doubles as her kid’s playroom and her art studio. When not painting or writing, Nishi enjoys taking care of her two daughters, running outside with the sound of nature, and drinking a cup of hot mocha.
Artist Statement
I am inspired by nature and fueled by emotions. As an introvert, I absorb the energies of my natural surroundings, relationships, and personal feelings. I start with a minimal palette of colors and intuitively add shape, texture, and more colors as I progress deeper into the vibrations of an experienced moment. The end result is a visual conversation on canvas, before words can claim them.

Interview
What inspires your art practice and keeps you motivated?
Being present with my mind and body during my journaling, yoga practice, and taking long walks.
How does your mission as an artist influence the work you create?
My mission is to normalize grief and encourage the feeling of happiness again. Emotions can be difficult to explain to a person. My abstract and semi-abstract work reflects the ambiguity and complexity of feeling all kinds of emotions, sometimes at the same time, without the use of words.
What mindset tip do you rely on to overcome challenges in your art career?
I remind myself that I do not have to be perfect and to keep practicing. I try to find something good from every piece I make.
How do you hope your art impacts the world or your community?
I hope that my work gives people the space to feel safe in their emotions and explore anything that may be holding them back. To feel freely.
